Transform Yourself – The Boy and The Cocoon

Transform Yourself – The Boy and The Cocoon

Embrace Change – Part 1

This is a story about a little boy who found a butterfly cocoon. Every day the little boy would go to visit it until one day it was different. A small opening appeared. The little boy watched the butterfly for a few hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole.

All of a sudden, the butterfly stopped trying to get out of the cocoon. It didn’t seem to make any more progress. The butterfly was not moving any more. So the little boy thought he could help it.

He took a pair of scissors and very slowly, with surgical precision and loving care, he cut away the remaining bit of cocoon, being very careful not to hurt the butterfly.

It worked! The butterfly was free and easily came out!

Except something was strange. The butterfly’s body was swollen up and it’s wings were all shriveled and deformed. It didn’t look good at all. The little boy continued watching the butterfly, thinking that at any moment the wings would expand to support it’s body and it would fly happily!

Unfortunately, neither happened. In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of it’s life crawling around with a swollen body and deformed wings. Not a pretty sight. It never was able to fly.

What the boy, in his kindness and impatience, did not understand was the natural process of growth and life. The restrictive cocoon and the struggle through the little opening of the cocoon is nature’s way of forcing fluid from the butterfly’s body into it’s wings so that it would be ready for flight after it emerged from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives! Obstacles challenge us to use our minds to solve situations and grow with experience. If we went through life without any obstacles, both our minds and our bodies would atrophy. We would never be able to spread our wings and fly on our own.

Just as a newborn goes through each stage of growth – and has to crawl before walking, and walk before running, we all go through a similar process in personal development, taking the time to learn the skills, marketing methods and discovering who we are and what we want. That’s the  beauty of having choices that line up with our own personal values and goals that creates a life of purpose, satisfaction and fulfillment.

So, give yourself the time it takes to grow into the person you need to become!  There’s a beautiful person inside you, just waiting to come out…
